Counselling is a talking therapy where a trained counsellor helps individuals manage emotional difficulties, personal challenges or mental health issues in a safe, confidential setting. It allows individuals to talk openly about their thoughts and feelings without judgement.
There are several types of counselling, each with its own technique and focus. Here at Lucy Lampard Counselling I, predominately, offer a Person-Centred approach which focusses on creating a safe, non-judgemental space where you can talk openly. I listen without telling you what to do, helping you to explore your feelings and understand your self better. It is a flexible approach which allows you to find your own way forward at your own pace.
The number of counselling sessions can vary depending on the individual needs, the type of counselling, and the specific issue being addressed. Short-term counselling may last between 6 to 12 sessions, whereas longer term therapy can extend to several months or even years. The frequency is usually weekly but this can be adjusted to suit the client's circumstances and progress.
The first session will typically be spent getting to know you and understanding the reasons you've sought counselling. It is also an opportunity to discuss practical details, such as how many sessions you might need, confidentiality and the boundaries of the therapeutic relationship. It's a time to set expectations and you can ask any questions about the process.
Yes counselling is confidential. Counsellors are bound by ethical guidelines, such as those set out by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), to keep everything discussed in sessions private. However, there are a few exceptions: if a counsellor believes you or someone else is at serious risk of harm then a counsellor would usually discuss this with you first. Confidentiality, and its limits are discussed at the assessment stage and during the first session.
There is no charge for an initial consultation/assessment. After that each session is charged at £50. Concessions are available for counsellors in training and students.
Yes, I have a diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. I am also a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). The BACP set ethical standards and guidelines for practice, ensuring that counsellors are properly trained and adhere to professional codes of conduct.
A typical session last 50 minutes. If you are late for the session, it will not be extended beyond the scheduled time.
Yes counselling can be delivered online, and it has become increasingly popular, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. The platform used for online counselling is Zoom. However, spaces are limited, therefore please specify if this is your preference when making an enquiry.
